Gas furnace inducer or combustion blower problems
|
|
When troubleshooting, understand you are working with potentially lethal voltages and a highly flammable gas. If you do not have the ability to do these operations safely, do not attempt them.
The inducer must operate and prove that it is operating before the furnace may continue the ignition sequence.
There are several problems related to inducers:
Noise coming from the inducer.
Motor hot but not turning.
Inducer running but unit not starting.
Noise. This could be an inducer problem or a blockage in the inducer.
Birds and mice sometimes will crawl into the vent pipe and end up caught in the blades.
The other noise problem could be the blower wheel falling apart.
The obvious fix here is to remove the venting at the inducer and remove the obstruction. If the blower wheel falls apart, it is best to replace the entire inducer assembly rather than just the wheel. The reason for this is the inducer is balanced as a unit at the factory and may vibrate if only the wheel is replaced.
Motor hot but not turning. This usually is a failure of the bearings in the inducer motor. There is no repair for this. The inducer assembly must be replaced. You sometimes can get the unit to run temporarily by oiling the bearings but it will stop again in a few hours or days.

Inducer running but unit not starting. This may not be the inducer at all but could be a pressure problem in the unit. For a look at pressure switch problems, check here. It could also be an inducer not coming up to speed due to bearing problems, or a vent blockage.
